Responding safely to fire alarm false alarms
Treat every alarm as a real event first, then have authorised people and a registered contractor establish the cause.
If there is fire or immediate danger
Leave the premises using a safe route and call Hong Kong emergency services on 999. Do not remain to investigate or use a lift.
Protect life before classifying the alarm
When an alarm sounds, occupants should follow the emergency procedure. Do not tell people to remain because no smoke is visible, the panel identifies one zone, or the same detector has activated before.
Reset and recovery should begin only after an appropriate site check finds no sign of fire and the authorised person named in the premises emergency procedure coordinates the next steps.
Do not silence, isolate or disable casually
Silencing a panel does not mean that danger has ended. Unauthorised zone isolation, detector removal, power shutdown or prolonged suspension of an alarm connection can prevent warning or emergency response to a real fire.
Any necessary temporary isolation should be carried out by authorised, competent people under a defined procedure, with the start time, scope, reason, compensatory measures and restoration time recorded.
Use records to find recurring causes
Steam, dust, construction contamination, environmental change, ageing devices, wiring and power faults are possible causes, but a case should not be closed on a guess. Record the date, time, detector location, site activity, panel message and actions taken.
Recurring alarms require inspection, testing and repair advice from a registered fire service installation contractor of the appropriate class. Any relocation or type change must also be checked against approval and submission requirements.
Practical checklist
- Every alarm receives an immediate response
- Unauthorised people do not delay evacuation or a 999 call
- Detectors have not been removed or covered
- Every isolation has scope, timing and approval records
- Panel events and site activities are logged
- Recurring faults are investigated by a registered contractor
- Normal status is verified after restoration
When to call a registered contractor
An unexplained, recurring or system-related alarm is not a repair task for an ordinary user.
- The same zone or detector repeatedly activates
- The panel shows a fault, isolation, battery, charger or communication problem
- Construction, fit-out or a change of use may affect detector layout or sensitivity
