If there is fire or immediate danger

Leave the premises using a safe route and call Hong Kong emergency services on 999. Do not remain to investigate or use a lift.

Match the extinguishing agent to the hazard

Common extinguishers in Hong Kong include water, foam, dry powder, carbon dioxide and clean-agent types. Each has specific uses and limitations. Never guess from colour alone when electricity, flammable liquids or cooking oils are involved.

Selection and use should follow the premises risk, approval requirements, cylinder label and manufacturer instructions. An untrained person should not attempt to use equipment when the fire type or extinguisher suitability is uncertain.

An extinguisher is not a reason to remain

Only consider using an extinguisher on a very small, incipient fire when you are trained, the extinguisher is suitable, a clear safe exit is behind you and you will not be exposed to smoke. If any condition is absent, leave and call 999.

Stop immediately if the fire grows, smoke develops, one attempt does not control it or you feel unsafe. Never let the fire get between you and the exit, and do not go back for another extinguisher.

Limit routine checks to safe visual observations

Confirm that the extinguisher is in its designated place, clearly marked and accessible. Look for rust, deformation, leaks or damage to the cylinder, hose, nozzle, handle and safety pin. Where a gauge is fitted, it should be within the manufacturer's specified range.

Do not open, discharge, refill or repair a cylinder yourself. Statutory inspection, pressure testing and disposal must follow the applicable requirements. A limited exemption for certain voluntarily installed domestic equipment must not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Practical checklist

  • Location and type match the identified risk
  • Access is not blocked by goods or fit-out works
  • Cylinder and hose show no rust or damage
  • Safety pin and tamper seal are intact
  • Gauge is in the specified range where fitted
  • Inspection label and dates are legible
  • Any defective unit is clearly marked and followed up

When to call a registered contractor

Extinguishers installed because the law requires them must be installed, inspected, maintained and disposed of under the applicable requirements.

  • The cylinder is corroded, leaking, dented, under pressure or has a broken seal
  • Annual inspection, periodic pressure testing or replacement is due
  • A change of use, licence or layout requires the quantity and type to be reassessed
